Ok. Here's my .02. Doctors, just like any other health care professional,
are not "dopes." They are educated, caring professionals who want to do the
best for their patients, believe it or not. (I am breathing deeply
here). I myself make mistakes, and sometimes I may inadvertently do
something that might have been done better with a different intervention.
If someone calls me a "dope," then I am much less likely to listen or
change my practice.

That being said, the comment "While I have a LOT of respect for the
medical community as a whole, sometimes I feel like they get defensive
over what they do." is an accurate one. Of COURSE people get defensive when
attacked and called names.
: ) this is also normal human behavior.

I suggest that we examine the situation, in this case, Marie's
correspondent, and take exactly the tack that was suggested. Enlist his
education and support rather than dis him. If provided with references
from respected journals, and invited to participate in a lively discussion
without labeling, progress can be made. This invites change, rather than
inviting rancour and dismissal.

Hard to do, but I do think that it is the way to go. Barbara Wilson Clay,
as always, provides an example of how to do this with every post she writes.
