Just made an appointment for my 16 month old to have minor surgery
(undescended testicle) a month from now. So pleased Children's Hospital in
Boston considers breastmilk a clear fluid, and it is listed right there in
the printed-information guidelines, alongside juice and water, as something
the child CAN have up to 3 hours pre-op. Formula is listed as a no-no. This
is widely considered to be among the best anasthesia depts. in the US so if
anyone out there is petitioning for this, I can send you a copy of these
guidelines!
Unfortunately the medical co-ordinator did spoil it rather by turning blue
when I said how nice it was that my baby could still have breastmilk. 'Oh,'
she said, aghast.'Breastmilk is OK for nursing INFANTS, so I SUPPOSE it's
OK for him.....'!!!
