One of the "sticky wickets" I encountered in trying to help aspiring students
is that most hospitals, health departments and other HCP settings require
that anyone in the clinic who encounters patients needs health screening. As an
employee, there is usually a TB test, immunization update, etc. (sort of like a
school physical! - that's how nursing students get to work with patients.) If
someone is a "Student" in a program "without walls" such as BSC, Healthy
Children 2000, or another self study program, they may not have that. Even when I
went through the UCLA educator program almost 16 years ago, there are no such
criteria to meet. BTW as a student, I got to shadow the famous Pam
Hirsch......
In my Illinois hospital, the supervisor had agreed to having a PC/CLC from
the Health Department come shadow one of the LCs because she knew the HD had
screening requirements. If the prospective intern could just get the information
from HR (via the LC of course) maybe she could bring a heath release from her
doctor and that's all it would take. What type of clearance is need for the
hospital volunteers who walk around an pass newpapers and ice water, or wheel a
mom and baby down to the door?
Food for thought...and trying to help
