At our hospital, the bath is delayed (most of the time) until after the first breastfeeding session. I would really be interested in evidence which proves that an immersion bath does not increase umbilical cord infections. The bath on the warmer does stress them out...not to mention the *nurses* giving the bath scrub the baby's head and hair with a *toothbrush* provided in the admission pack! I guess it's too expensive to provide the soft baby hair brushes that we used to supply. Change is WAY too slow at our hospital... our "exclusively breastfed babies" are given sips of sterile water after birth. And some (well meaning) nurses have decided there "might be something to this nipple confusion thing" and those nurses squirt the sterile water into the baby's mouth while they are lying on their backs (of course they choke and sputter). It's a never ending battle! (sigh)
