Hi Jennifer,

This is a little late, but I felt the need to comment. I breastfed my own
twins for 20 months. They were born at 38 5/7 weeks and weighed 6-15 and
7-3. So I do not have the experience of discordant premies. I have three
children, when my twins were born, my first child was 2 years 4 months old.

You mentioned the Mom in your practice also breastfed two older children.
If they are still young... she has a lot on her hands. Anything that would
make her life easier is what she needs...I would not bog her down with
details, but would encourage a lot of help from others. You seem to be very
much on top of things with monitoring the breastfeeding, checking on these
babies frequently, and enlisting the help of the IBCLC.

As for my own experience, this is what worked for me - I breastfed my twins
solely, until they were latching and feeding well (a few days PP), then
started breastfeeding them at the same time as much as possible. I did use a
twin breastfeeding pillow and the hardest part was getting the second baby
on and not losing the latch of the first one. A helper here is great. If
I didn't breastfeed them at the same time, at least some of the time, I
would have never gotten a break. I eventually assigned each baby a breast
per day, because I could not remember which breast, which baby was on last
....so it was a lot easier to remember and seemed like the best way to get
equal stimulus, varying positions, etc.

I thought the response you received from Barbara Wilson-Clay was very good.
Hope the breastfeeding trio are progressing well.
