Karo syrup, as detailed in here just a few weeks ago, can develop 
bacterial growth, and should not be given to a baby at all.  It will be 
in the archives, but it's a big no no, so you're not overstepping your 
boundaries by pointing out it's dangerous advice.

If she's too engorged to latch, hand massage and reverse pressure 
softening should help:

My concern is how often the baby isn't with mother, and whether the 
trauma of the birth is affecting her so badly, that there is a danger 
she's not bonding well, and this may lead to more problems.  I 
understand how hard long distance support can be, but keep on in there - 
she needs someone to say how well she's doing and to encourage her.  
Constant skin to skin is what they both need right now.  Is she hand 
expressing or pumping?  The main issue right now is getting her milk 
supply up, and if the baby isn't emptying her breasts, she needs to be. 

I think in order to be a good friend it's okay for you to ask the 
questions, as long as you pitch it so that she knows you're just 
listening to her, not 'looking' for the right answer.
