My children (girls, eight and almost five) are anxiously awaiting the
birth of our new baby in November. They are also full of questions in the
aftermath of the hurricane - and need reassurance of our safety. As we
live in an area that does not experience hurricanes, I have tried to put
this into perspective for them by discussing something they can
understand: how we prepare for snowstorms. They (especially the eight
year old) can remember blizzards here in upstate New York when we have
lost power and been snowed in for a few days, living in the one room with
a wood stove to keep warm, and eating cereal and crackers. My younger
daughter said to us, "But what will the baby eat if we can't get to the
store?" and my older one replied, "Mama will be nursing her, silly!" You
could just see the light bulb go on in her head, and it opened up a very
heartfelt discussion about the importance of breastfeeding that I hope
they will always remember.
