Pam: I would like to give a slightly different spin to the guilt issue
and use selfishness in a different light. Guilt may be stronger if one
only thinks that by not breastfeeding we are withholding health benefits
from our babies. Part of informing moms-to-be is to let them know that
breastfeeding has important health benefits for them as well, and that it
provides physical and emotional pleasure, thus it is partly a "selfish"
act to breastfeed. The economic benefits to them and their families also
have to be stressed. Then we can start to get away from the "I should
breastfeed for the sake of my baby and martyr myself" kind of thinking
and get away from the idea that mothers who don't breastfeed are bad
mothers. When I discuss the infant feeding decision, I bring up possible
feelings of regret about missing a special and unique experience rather
than guilt in those who choose not to breastfeed. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
