Dear friends,
In my, perhaps not so humble, opinion it does not matter which charts are used in terms of doing harm. It is more how it is used that can do the harm. Growth in weight and length is only one set of parameters to assess healthy develoment. As long as the amount of increase in weight is used as the almost sole parameter for health, babies and mothers will be harmed with ill advise. An exclusively breastfed baby with good techniques can be a fragile, tiny child or a chubby little Buddha and both can be perfectly healthy, developping well within current ranges and grow up to be healthy, normal adults. A child can more or less follow it's line or bump up and down in an very personal pattern and both will probably be as healthy as can be.

Relating this to the level of knowledge and/or attitude in HCPs: I think med schools teach way to little about health and normalcy and focus too much on pathology. That turns minds on into a ''need to fix''-mode, without recognising and appreciating variations in normalcy.

  Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL, in an unusual warm variation of normal november weather in southern Netherlands
