Yet I would like a more friendly, easier to say and less polysyllabic
phrase....feeding 'ad lib'? Too Latin. 'Ask' feeding? Silly. 'Feeding
as and when you or the baby want to' is okay...

I use request feeding because if the baby is truly "demand" fed (as we
understand the term), all the baby has to do is request to feed. You
can use that opportunity to point out that the baby doesn't have to
cry to be nursed, but can request in other ways. Sometimes when I see
a baby root I say "oh, she's asking to be fed."

Not saying I'm altogether happy with any of these terms either though.
