I can relate to the story about the boy who did not speak due to a tongue-tie. Though my story is not nearly as severe, it is similar in that Simon, now 3-1/2, was not saying much at age 2. He was also the only kid I had ever met who didn't like lollipops or ice cream cones (but he'd wolf down ice cream in a dish). I talked to a friend who is also an EDIS specialist around here about how I had Simon's frenulum clipped at 3 weeks old (I felt like I was breastfeeding a cat and since he was my 2nd, I knew it wasn't supposed to feel that way so I found a doc who would clip for me) and I was concerned that perhaps he wasn't talking because of that issue. She gave us some stretching games and exercises to do with Simon. Within a few weeks, he was talking but a lot of his sounds were a bit odd -- "th," "l," and "st" were especially difficult for him, but all dipthongs came out funny. He seemed to realize this and as a result became shy and not eager to use his words because he could hear that they did not sound to his ears the way he wanted them to sound. We made sure his older sister did not tease him for his speech and we worked with him a lot with the stretching games. He now speaks quite well and readily.

I do think his frenotomy was an incomplete repair and I'm glad we did the stretching exercises. I'm looking at his teeth now and wondering whether he'll need orthodontic work as an adult (I never did) -- things don't look like they're in all the right places. But...my husband and I are both instrumentalists by trade and by golly, Simon already articulates (starts a sound on a musical instrument) better than a lot of professionals we work with!
