Joy thoguhtfully pointed out:

"One thing I have noticed, though, is that many (even medical personnel, who
should have their sights set a litttle higher) respond by saying, "this is
something that has been done for *ever*; of course it is safe and effective,
etc." This mode of
thinking goes along with, in my opinion, "I don't care what research says; I
(or my momma or my aunt or whoever) did just the opposite and everything
turned out just fine!" How do ya'll deal with this sort of mentality?"

I don't know as I'd actually have the nerve to respond this way, but the old
"do we *really* need aseptic/sterile technique" or "mandatory handwashing
between patients" comes to my mind. Geesh. I mean, the logic of these
arguments escapes me.

It is amazing how some people won't use their common sense when it comes
to the obvious, merrily going along and doing whatever it is that they feel
like doing without a lick of research to back themselves up. And then, when
it comes to the natural and normal, we need research to back these
practices, and to defend ourselves and our positions. GEESH LOUISE, as
they say in Vermont.

Kathleen, who is a lot more up front here than I am in person re: this
issue. but I THINK strong words a lot. Grrr. : ./
