Dear lactnet-ers,

I had a mom today who posted on her Facebook page that she had experienced an episode of plugged duct for the past few days and she is currently on prescribed antibiotics. She had avoided nursing on her affected side due to the sharp/throbbing/jabbing pains felt. Today is her 3rd day on the antibiotics, and when she pumped, she was quite shocked to see blood coming out for the first 3minutes of the pumping session. She continued on for the next 5minutes until there was no more blood coming out.

I'm curious if the mother has anything in particular to worry about? I would have advised her to nurse on the plugged duct side to help it clear sooner instead of not nursing and to perhaps investigate further for possible signs of a thrush infection as she mentioned she is experiencing sharp shooting pains.

Mom also had a few responses in her post thread from 2 of her other friends who also happened to experience this before
but didn't quite paid too much attention to it.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Many thanks in advance.
moe
