When I had a mom in ICU I made it an issue that it was a nursing staff
responsibility to see that mom's breasts were expressed regularily (prevent
stasis, promote milk supply, promote comfort - if you need nursing dx.) and
that did NOT mean handing her the pump parts and saying you do it dearie.
The nurses had to do it for her, she was too ill.  Family can help and the
nurses really appreciate any help they can get.  Drs order was along the
lines of express breasts q. 4 hours for comfort and to prevent stasis. They
can not skip a doctors order, OB gave it.   Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
