I believe it was discussed on Lactnet this summer about a company in New York
that makes sterile, food grade plastic containers for the dairy industry. I
do not have a financial interest in this company, but called them and they were
very willing to send us samples of their containers. They are ideal in that
they come in different sizes, and are already sterile with the lid attached.
The only drawback is that they do not have threads on the top so mom would have
to pump into something else and pour the milk into the container. They are
priced at 9-12 cents each.
Working in a NICU, we do not recommend the use of plastic bags for storage of
EBM. The fat adheres to the soft sides as well as the potential is great for
contamination either from a tear in the plastic bag or because they are
unstable and difficult to pour from.
We are looking into the use of the containers I mentioned above. The name of
the company is Capitol Vial. I do know of one hospital here in town that is
already using them and seem happy with them.
