Sarah--
I keep a lending library of breastfeeding books and books on other topics
(postpartum depression, crying, parenting, etc.). I have library pockets and
cards in them so it's easy to keep track. I do the same with videos.

I use Bestfeeding a lot when I need to send something with great pictures
and diagrams home with a mother to reinforce what we've been talking about
in a consult, or I need a pictorial representation of what we're trying to
achieve. It's also quite low literacy so I use it when that is needed.

I use the Womanly Art for women who want lots more information on
breastfeeding and parenting and who are able to read well.

I used to love The Nursing Mothers Companion until the revised 1990)
edition, in which bottles are suggested for a number of problems. I was
quite taken aback by this and still haven't figured out what Huggins'
reasoning was, since alternative feeding methods were becoming so much more
common by '90. I use it seldom because of this, but it does have some good
pictures and great charts. Very easy to find information in here, unlike
WAB, for example, which is poorly indexed.

You didn't ask about videos, but thought I'd throw it in: I use the Royal
College of Midwives very excellent video for bf classes as well as for
mothers who need reinforcement, or who just need a little "fine-tuning."
It's geared towards teaching midwives how to teach bf, but has what I
consider the best sequence on latching and "falling off" of all the videos
I've seen. I also have A Healthier Baby and like much of it, but find the
background music very annoying (sorry, Linda) so use it less in a teaching
situation. The new Norwegian video "Breast is Best" is quite lovely and has
some great shots of nursing toddlers and sharing sleep.

I would be interested in what LCs in hospitals find useful since I'm going
to be making some recommendations to our local hospitals regarding video
purchases. They have very poor resources at present.
