Game - 8 year old to adult crowd, give out gold wrapped chocolate coins
(in honor of the gold standard in infant feeding)
        1. Squares of colorful paper, one hole punch at the top to hang them on a
board. On side facing kids, short word items about formula risks or
benefits of bfding. (on back side of card: symbol to match fact -- bfding
mom/babe, or a formula picture (i.e. "no bottles" symbol as the formula
symbol needs to be unappealing - laminate the cards). If you don't have a
board, can be done like flash cards.
Examples: more brain power, Michael Jordan, best way to feed baby in
public
poor eyesight, lung problems, smelly diapers (we usually have about 20
cards)
Adults say -- Michael Jordan? What do you mean? We say, "Was he
breastfed or formula fed?" (he was breastfed for over 2 years)
Can play numerous ways. Simpliest is for them to pick out 1 card and you
talk together about whether the fact is about breastfeeding or formula --
once they choose, they turn over the card to see the symbol on the other
side.
One 12 year old AfricanAmer. young man came back to our table and he
wanted to play all the cards. He said, "When I get married, my wife is
going to breastfeed." (our patient pop. is 90+% African Amer. and our
bfing rates went from 6% to 30% in over 5 years of effort -- so I was
pleased as punch with his reaction).
        2. Having a poster showing baby AT THE BREAST! A 4 yr. old girl came up
to me in our clinic and said, "Why is that baby on that lady's titty?" We
talked together about how she feeds her baby that way....(& I thought she
was too young to notice - NOT!)
        3. And have a baby doll and just let the kids hold it. If they ask you
about the doll, you can tell them about your breastfed baby (some of our
kids think the dolls are real and they want to know where they sleep and
all). Our clinics are all named after important persons in our community
and we named our bfing dolls after the clinics: Courtney, Homer, Max and
Florence (it is a hoot!)
        4. Oh, always have the literature (i.e. Marsha Walker's article on the
risks of formula) available for the doubting Thomas to review.
        5. If you have a quieter situation, you could borrow the "WIC National
Breastfeeding Promotion Campaign" Videotape to play in the background. It
shows EuropeanAmer. males talking about the benefits of breastfeeding, and
AfricanAmer. women promoting breastfeeding. And it shows those cute,
adorable baby ads promoting breastfeeding. All WIC offices should have the
tape and be able to loan it to you (if they know they have it -- a problem
here with some of our offices).
"Breastfeeding - Education for Life" is going to be fun!! We ordered
dolls from the WABA site. Can't wait to see what they look like in
person!!
