A mom I am working with has asked me to see if anyone has any more/new
information for her. She is nursing a 22mo. Her first symptoms appeared in
June, and she was nearly hospitalized before she was diagnosed with Lyme
disease in July. She completed a course of three weeks of doxycycline
and had a couple of weeks symptom free. Her symptoms have returned and she
has started a 3 month course of doxycycline. (She is allergic to penicillin
and cephalosporins.) She is concerned about both the possibility of
transmission of Lyme disease to her child through breastfeeding and about
the lengthy course of an antibiotic she would rather her child not be
exposed to. She has done quite a bit of her own research, and has settled
on continuing to nurse, supplementing the child with calcium. She is also
interested to know if anyone is currently studying Lyme disease in
breastfeeding, or breastfeeding while taking doxycycline for an extended
period of time, and she would be interested in participating in any
research if someone is looking for data.
