If you read the research on creamatocrits and breast fullness, volumes, etc., Hartmann's group had each mother in their study calculate her own breast volumes and compared milk samples before and after to correlate the creamatocrits with degree of drainage and volumes.  There was nothing sent out to use as diagnostic criteria.  I have a machine and have noted mothers with 46 calorie milk after breast drainage with a before of 24 calorie.  It is just another tool, not as good as a voltage meter.  Can we ever get past the idea that the human body is like a Mercedes - get the right model #, diagnose the problem part and replace?

The other issue with either of these measurements is that we don't actually have a reference by which to assess their adequacy or otherwise.  We don't know how much fat *should* be in a sample of milk taken at any given time of the day or night.  We don't know how much milk a breastfed baby *should* be taking either in a single feed or across 24 hours.
