We have a mom in the clinic who had a breast abscess opened and drained. Of
course she was told not to nurse on the affected side. The mom has been
pumping and dumping the milk. She is not currently on antibiotics.
There is a pen rose drain in place. The wound is draining a very thick green
discharge. It looks very much like Pseudomonas drainage. Mom says there
isn't as much drainage as before.
For now we are awaiting the results of a culture and she will continue to pump
but save the milk until she hears from us.
We cannot find references for Pseudomonas and safety breastfeeding. If it
does turn out to be Pseudomonas, if the bacteria got into the milk, would it
be harmful for the baby? Or would the baby's stomach acid kill it? She would
like to put the baby back to the breast but we want to be certain it's OK
First.
