Dear Friends:
Lena describes a situation where she, who chose to pump and bottlefeed,
had support withdrawn by the lactation community around her.
I am sorry that you had that experience.
I have a mother I am working with right now who seems to be heading in
that direction. Baby never latched in hospital, mother has such huge breasts
that initially we had to work on ways for her to feel where things were
because she couldn't see them, and the baby would only go to breast if a
silicon newborn small nipple shield was in place. I have made 2 home visits;
during the last one she nursed in a side-lying position which was
comfortable. She and her baby did the attaching. I also left her with a video
(one of the Chloe Fisher ones from Markit Video that shows lots of babies
attaching to different size and shape breasts) to watch for inspiration and
ideas.
I have called nearly every day. The mother is thrilled with how much
milk she can pump. She hasn't put the baby to breast very much and doesn't se
em to want to. She hasn't watched the video yet, and she has had it for 10
days! I have told her that she can pump and bottle-feed for as long as she
wants to, and that the bottom line is that her baby will be getting the best
nutrition possible. I told her that some mothers have pumped and bottle-fed
for months and months and months.
I have also told her that my focus was on her stated intention to
BREASTfeed (the reason that she hired me), and that if she was serious about
it, then to watch the video and practice doing what she had already done. I
mentioned the ease of breastfeeding, which is less work than pumping and
bottle-feeding.
I then asked when she'd like me to call her again. She thought if she
was left alone over the weekend, that I could call on Monday.
     The choice is hers.
     Warmly,
