I just got up the nerve to call my unit manager and offered to teach an
inservice in lactation after I complete the Breast feeding Educator Program
in a couple weeks. I haven't heard back, but I did say boldly "our staff is
in great need of inservice in this area" (eek). I hope she doesn't can the
idea-- I don't want to be paid, but have the staff paid to attend and at
least one good lactation text purchased for our unit (we have none). So
we'll see if it gets anywhere.... the biggest push(es) I'm going for will be
to
get them nursing in L&D, with breast babes receiving NO supplemental feeds
on the warmer (unless medically indicated-- at present they *all* have their
"suck" evaluated with glucose water), and at least one alternative feeding
method available (ie finger feeding) other than the bottle (if necessary).
As you can tell, we have a loooong way to go, but this may be a start.
Radical stuff here-- I'm probably getting in over my head with this one...
any suggestions?
Cyndi, RN in WI
