I couln't agree more with Barbara Wilson Cay's recent post about equipment.
I too work with women who are really struggling with breastfeeding. Many are
ready to quit. These are the real disasters of feeding problems. In the
"good old days", many of these situations led to babies dying. Mothers died
too. I have used all the tools, when they are appropriate, to get the mother
and baby to breastfeeding. Although not every situation can be fixed, many
are. ANd like Barbara's experience, some of the most intervened early
breastfeeding has led to long term breastfeeding. Many of these mothers keep
me informed of their progress 1 or 2 years later. They are most grateful for
the pumps, shields, bottles, and even formula that made getting to
breastfeeding possible. Ann Anderson
