I was delighted to see Catherine Fetherston's succinct discussion of
incidence of mastitis in her prospective studies, and her comments on the
threads resulting from the journal club issue. I can remember having a
discussion some years ago with Ed Newton about the incidence of mastitis.
The medical lit. really states an incidence around 3%, but I just did not
see how that could be true given the number of cases I'd seen (and continue
to see) in priv. practice. Of course, priv. practice is self-selected for
problems, but even so, there was no way 3% could have been correct. So
bravo for all those engaged in descriptive research. There is more we don't
know, and room for so much exciting discovery.
