  Hi Julia

I developed a pumping handout and here is what it says about pumping,

regardless of whether a nicu situation or not.

* Breasts should be emptied regularly (whenever there has not

been an effective breastfeeding). For a baby not nursing, or nursing

only fair, it is important to pump 8 - 10 times every 24 hours. Pump

about 15 - 20 minutes on each breast. Once milk supply is fuller, pump 2

minutes after the last drop of milk or up to 30 minutes. Double pumping

allows you to pump both breasts at the same time, so it's faster and

gets your hormone levels higher.

For moms who have a premie or baby in nicu, I give the color 4 pg

handout called Pumping Milk for Your Preterm Baby by Hoover and

Wilson-Clay. I think it is an excellent resource.
