Gabrielle Palmer's book is I am glad to say still in very current use
in the UK, mostly in the newer edition of 1993.

Gay is very well known on 'the breastfeeding circuit' in the UK, and
very much liked.

It is an important book on our reading list for NCT bfc students, and
an absolute basic text for anyone working with breastfeeding women
anywhere in the world who wants to place what she/he does in a
readily-understandable historical and cultural context.

I don't think anything of what she says has changed since 1988. If
anything, formula is promoted even more enthusiastically. In the UK,
where it is illegal to promote formula direct to mothers, the
manufacturers

* promote follow on (which is not illegal)
* market unceasingly to healthcare professionals
* have developed clubs, networks, mailing lists, websites for
mothers, which seem to be unaffected by the law
* use 'sponsored editorial' to reach mothers
* continually break the law with impunity with regard to special retail offers

If Gay were to write an updated PofB, she would need a whole chapter
on how the arrival of the internet has made it easier for formula to
be promoted.

NCT bfc, tutor UK
