Thank you all so much for your helpful comments and insights into twin
breastfeeding infants. Many of the comments were exactly what I was looking
for in how to help these little guys early on.
I saw the babies today for their first post-hospital visit. They are 4 days
old now. Both babies are slightly jaundiced (although not bad, and not
requiring therapy) The larger baby lost more weight to begin with, but now
has turned around and is feeding like a trooper, is stooling frequently, has
cleared his meconium, and all around looks good. The smaller one has sort
of trailed off a bit, though, as many of you warned. He is waking
frequently to feed, but seems to wear out after 3-5 minutes, breast
compression gets him going again, but usually not for long. Although he wet
a number of diapers, he has not stooled in 24 hours. So mom is going to
pump post-feed and supplement EBM by spoon. Fortunately, her supply does
not appear to be a problem. Her milk came in at under 48 hours, despite
being pre-eclamptic and on Mag! Our IBCLC will call on her, and I will see
them again 4/17. Mom is very dedicated and upbeat about the whole situation
and has fairly good family support.
Anyway, thanks for all your help, and feel free to add any additional info!
