Mary,

I've been told directly by multiple doctors and nurses and a lab director
that they do these tests early because they want to get it done before
anybody leaves the hospital. They know there will be some retesting for
false positives because of the feeding issue but feel it is worth it
because they can at least rule out a lot of true negatives who might
otherwise not even get tested. And the assumption is that moms and dads
won't care about extra testing because insurance pays for all of it anyway.
It's the same thing with the hearing tests--lots of false negatives, and
the audiologist I followed up with in my son's case said they just have to
check the box that it was done, and since it's a state requirement, there
will be letters (we got those; they were written in an unpleasant way) to
remind parents to follow up.
