Just a brief aside to the babies in class issue. Several years ago when my
husband was doing his graduate work at the Naval Postgraduate School in
Monterey, CA (really hard, rough orders ;-)), one of his classmates (and
friend of mine) had a baby. This mom was a Naval Academy graduate and Naval
Flight Officer for jet aircraft.

After her baby was born she took him to her classes and the professors were
accommodating. As he got older she arranged her schedule so that either she
or her husband were with him. This baby went on to nurse for 2 years and
mom is now an astronaut. She is due to be in the space shuttle sometime in
the near future, I believe. I keep looking for her on the television.

I helped her with her baby after he was born and I got the nicest note from
her one Christmas thanking me for helping her and telling me that she had
gone on to help other new mothers (in a casual, supportive kind of way) and
reminded me that it was my help that encouraged her and enabled her to
support others and she was glad to be able to "repay" me in this way. This
was a revelation to me since I don't remember doing much for her in terms of
actual help (I was clueless at the time), but something made an impression.
I'd bet if her baby was not allowed in class he might not have lasted on the
breast as long as he did.

Kathy
