Dear Friends:
My new JHL arrived, with over 30 pages of abstracts of presentations
from the 13th International Conference of the International Society for
Research in Human Milk and Lactation.
In the editor's note, "It must be noted that this meeting was funded in
part by industry."
    In part?
3 of 4 major sponsors are industry: Mead Johnson, Martek, and Nestle.
4 of 6 sponsors are industry: Abbott, Nutricia, Wyeth and Medela.
1 of 3 travel awards is from food industry: Danone

How would we feel if RJR Reynolds and Philip Morris paid for the bulk of
a conference about crib death?

What a miserable dilemma we are in. Are there so little sources of
independent funding that we have to live with this situation? We need research.
Researchers have to live, and have decent laboratories and facilities, plus all
the materials to do analysis. This costs money, lots of money. Where are the
non-profit sources?

I can't imagine that industry is ignoring any of the research findings,
and will use whatever is relevant to make a product that competes with
lactation. How can we fuss if some nurse doesn't care if a formula company logo is
on some educational materials when the cognitive dissonance is so blatant at
a higher level?

Who gives a s*** about health, anyway, when profit is really what
matters?

    very upset,
