Reading about Manatees brought me back to a wonderful
memory. When I was pregnant with my first child, we visited
my husband's aunt in Florida. We went swimming @ Crystal
Springs on the St. John's River. There were Manatees there,
they are wonderfully gentle creatures even if they are not
cute. One had a baby, I didn't see her nursing but they
allowed you to stroke and hand feed them, and they would
brush up against you if you swam slowly without splashing.
This area is now closed off to boats and swimming, as it
should be , to protect them, you can view them from shore.
P.S. If you ever see the documentary on manatees by Jacque
Cousteau, the little boy feeding the Manatee is my husband,s
cousin. To make this more on topic, this was also a time
when that aunt shared her experiences Breastfeeding her 5
children. People around you have such an impact positive or
negative when you are pregnant, fortunately her words
encouraged me to Breastfeed even though she also had some
difficulty, and this was in the 70's when Breastfeeding rates
were dismally low. Chris Erland
