Hi Sanna-Mari (such a beautiful name!),
Do you think this baby was getting bottles and is now sort of 'nipple
confused?' I know this is a controversial 'diagnosis' but I have seen babies
begin refusing the breast or losing that wide gape/correct latch when they
start taking bottles frequently. Since baby is 4 mos old, he could be
offered the milk in a cup. Mother should be sure to use a very high quality
pump frequently and keep her supply going well. She should do the usual
nursing strike things like co-sleeping and cuddling and offering the breast
when baby is sleepy. I think you said that worked pretty well. I would d/c
all bottles and pacifiers if used and just offer the cup and breast. Of
course she can express the really painful side til it heals and use only the
comfortable side for now.
