<<HHS Office on Women's Health Joins with Basketball Great Michael Jordan's
Mom to Promote Breastfeeding

Dr. Suzanne Haynes of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
Office on Women's Health joined basketball star Michael Jordan's mother,
Deloris Jordan, on a radio media tour March 24 and 25, 2003 to highlight
the importance of breastfeeding and to advertise a new breastfeeding
helpline and website funded by HHS. In addition, they spoke about the
upcoming Ad
Council/HHS National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign which will be
launched in August 2003.

Dr. Haynes and Mrs. Jordan were interviewed by 14 radio stations and
networks in Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York and by national
networks such as CNN Noticias, ABC Urban Advantage and Metro Networks.
They spoke to the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding but also highlighted
the consequences and risks associated with not breastfeeding such as a
higher likelihood of diabetes, overweight and obesity, and hodgkins and
non-hodgkins lymphoma.  Mrs. Jordan gave her personal insights as a
breastfeeding mother and advocate of breastfeeding.

Dr. Haynes and Mrs Jordan also directed listeners to the National Women's
Health Information Center (NWHIC), a project of the Office on Women's
Health, and the new breastfeeding helpline and website that is designed to
help mothers with common breastfeeding problems and challenges.
Breastfeeding Information Specialists are available to answer emails and
assist callers with issues about positioning, pumping, storage, and many
other topics.  They also provide the support that moms, dads, prospective
parents, families, and healthcare providers may need to overcome
breastfeeding challenges.>>
