No matter what the reasons, there is always someone to undermine the
breastfeeding!
My niece was also told to start solids because her son (and fourth breastfed
baby) was gaining weight too fast. I really cant make any sense of this sort
of advice and had to bite my tongue when told.
Her children have always gained weight very quickly and been very fat, but
are slim now they are older.
Conversely, health professionals tell mothers to start solids because the
weight gain has slowed down (usual 4 month tailing off). Surely you cant
have it both ways?
My granddaughter, now 18 months still feeds as often as she can, in
preference to eating - which is pretty determined of her when my daughter
Harriet works full-time! She can go for days on hardly enough food to feed a
sparrow yet she looks well nourished. Harriet solved the problem of
conflicting advice very early on by deciding not to see any HPs and never
get her daughter weighed. She reckons that she knows her daughter best which
isn't bad for a 21 year old. (okay I admit that having an LC for a mum must
help!)
Mike Woolridge talks about the fat content of the milk, not the volume,
being the controller of appetite; that would surely mean that a bottle fed
baby who has less control over volume and whose milk may have a different
fat content depending on method of expression and time of day etc would
react differently to a baby who is feeding from the breast?
