I am guessing that it is because people are distracted as there is a war on.
I venture to guess that people are immersed in watching the war, war support
work (including supporting the families of those engaged in 'coalition'
armies), antiwar work or work with refugee and asylum seeker communities. I
know that in our community (Oldham -- remember our race riots?) we are
working hard to ensure that there is no racist backlash towards our
indigenous Muslim communities, or towards the refugee communities living
here (we have a large number of Iraqis and Afghanis -- especially
vulnerable). As soon as refugees from the present aggression reach the UK,
there will be that to deal with, too. This kind of work -- whatever your
view on the war and whichever 'side' you are working on -- is emotionally
exhausting, gruelling and harrowing.
