I heard Maryann Niefert speak several years ago. She made the statement "What
a lucky baby to begin life with a colostrum cocktail! " I got the impression
or maybe she even said that even if this is the only breastmilk feeding the
baby receives it boosts his immune system and can make a difference in his
life. I read in the American Journal of Public Health January 1999, vol. 89,
No.1: Breastfeeding and Infant Illness: A Dose-Response Relationship? The
summary of the study results suggested " that full breastfeeding has a
significant protective effect against common infant illnesses but minimal
breastfeeding does not. "

I have used the statement by Niefert in almost every counseling session,
in-service, etc. to justify encouraging the mother to at least breastfeed
once, if not for the few days colostrum is present. Have I been wrong? Do I
need to change how or what I'm saying to be accurate? What are your thoughts?
Thank you, Camille Foretich, BS, IBCLC, CHES in Jackson, Mississippi
