To reply to Sarah Wild's post: I have been concerned that when the fortified EBM is saved for the next feeding, it is usually saved in the refrigerator, thus it will need to be warmed for the feeding. HMBANA guidelines are to not warm fortified breast milk, so what is best practice? The only way around it is to warm the original EBM, add the fortifier just before feeding, then discard the remainder, which could be a significant amount. If the baby is receiving 5cc fortified EBM every 3 hrs, and the minimum to mix the fortifier in is 20ml, you have wasted 15ml of precious EBM. Unless you just leave the milk out until the next feeding (3 hours), whiich isn't recommended. And then you would still need to waste 5ml. We have a 10 bed Level II NICU, so I do not deal with this on a daily basis. How do some of you who work in a large NICU handle fortified EBM that is "left-over" after mixing in the fortifier?
