Dear Lactnetters

I've written an article on breastpumps for a South African baby
magazine and the editor of the magazine, who was until recently
a midwife for many years, wants to state in the article that
breast milk should only be refrigerated for 24 hours.

La Leche League's Breastfeeding Answer Book (my bible) states
that the period for a healthy full-term infant (the focus of my
article is on working and breastfeeding) is five days.
Subsequent to our disagreement I have been checking other
sources and have discovered that there are conflicting storage
times given. La Leche League's Lactation Consultant Series
states that the period is two days, as does Kathleen Auerbach's
book "Breastfeeding and Human Lactation." (I would be very
happy if you could comment on this, Kathleen).

Is this a controversial issue, and not cut and dried as I
originally thought? Anne, I've just read your letter and if
yours is a basic question, why do the various sources differ on
the issue. I think that 24 hours is far too
conservative (except maybe for pre-term or very ill infants so
maybe Anne's nurse is right in theory but not in what she does)
and could make working and breastfeeding seem even more
difficult than it is. As an LLL Leader I am also reluctant to
put my name to an article containing information that I
consider incorrect and outdated and would not give in one of
our meetings. Am I blowing this up out of proportion?

Thanks, Rina Groeneveld
