I have a friend who is the group event manager at just such a facility. The
thing is - if you RSVP - you are included in the final headcount and your
meal was paid for by the formula company whether you ate it or not - and
would have been even if you hadn't shown up. They pay so much per head as
agreed by a contract with the restaurant based on the head count provided to
them usually 72 hours prior. Typically the price includes dinner, drinks,
desert or whatever else has been requested but it is priced per head and
then a certain number of heads (usually 5%) is added for wiggle room - or
the price is inflated by that amount to cover extra heads. 


As a newly minted (soon to be )NP, there are times that I do want some of
the info offered at some of these events (but not the formula company events
- I'm talking pharmaceutical in general) however, I will never attend a
dinner presentation that is at any of the expensive restaraunts, I might
attend a moderate or low end place but the info had better be very worth
while with a speaker that I have wanted to hear. It just doesn't feel right
to me to ask patients to pay for my meals out of their pockets when they can
barely afford most of these medications to begin with!
