Dear all:

I just had a very bizarre and disturbing experience. I received a phone call from someone named Nathan Klein with United Health Care. He mentioned the name of one of my clients but did not provide a member ID or claim number. He called from one phone number, but then gave me another phone number to call. Since he did not provide me with the claim number, there was no way to get to a number through the phone cue where a real human would answer the phone. So, I called back the number he called from. The person at the phone number has nothing to do with United Health Care and was totally unaware that somehow a phone call from United Health Care had been routed through his number.

Has anyone else had this happen? Is it legal to route calls through a number that belongs to someone else? Seems like there may be an invasion of privacy on many levels, here.

Who do I turn to? I tried the New York State Health Commission, but can't get into the right office yet.
