Sorry Friends,

This should be read before my next post--it burped, and will only make
sense if you read it before my previous post! Thanks!

When my first two children were born, they both developed jaundice. My
pediatrician recommended placing the baby in front of a sunny window in
just a diaper, and nursing frequently. With my firstborn, it worked
wonderfully. In two day's time, the jaundice resloved, and everything
was fine. With my second child, the jaundice did not clear, in fact
was worse (my husband and I have blood type, Rh, and Lewis Factor
incompatabilities, and each of our three children had worse jaundice
than the previous child.) After 24 hours of phototherapy in the
hospital, we were released to again 'put the baby in a sunny window
and nurse frequently'. This did help to resolve the last of the
jaundice that he had after being discharged the second time.

The third time, we were home for two days, then my son was admitted, and
spent three days in the hospital. He was not discharged until his
bilirubin was 3, and the nurses were shoving bottles in his mouth every
chance they got. (My last was delivered in NY, the previous two in
MI). This sabotaged my efforts to breastfeed, and caused multiple
health issues for both he and I. We did get back to breastfeeding, with
much work. I did eventually change pediatricians here, and the one I
have now have also recommends the sunny window, and frequent
breastfeeding.

The bottom line is, for MILD jaundice, this is acceptable. However, I'd
caution the mom that she needs to consult with her doctor first, and
that if the jaundice is not resolved in a couple of days, that the baby
NEEDS to be seen by the doctor. There are situations in which the
bilirubin will continue to climb, despite one's best efforts. Many
pediatricians recommend the treatment that you carried out. They should
be informed, though, that this is what you intend to do, as it is part
of the baby's medical history.
