I just got the video of Dr. Klaus' talk at the ILCA convention. Aside from
making me want to save my pennies for the KC Convention, he spoke of two studies
I'd like to get my hands on.
One, related to an increase in fever in moms who had epidurals, he referred to
an article in Lancet by Fusi. He said it was in the handouts, but I didn't find
it in the syllabus I purchased. I have a great deal of difficulty getting
materials here, and it's impossible without the complete reference. Can someone
help me with the reference or the actual article?
He also referred to a study by Dr. Kennell which was not yet published but soon
would be related to the effect the epidurals had on the baby's ability to suck.
He stated about 25 - 30 % of the babies were affected. The LC's answered they
felt it was greater, but perhaps we only see the ones having problems... (He
got a standing ovation on this statement as we are all frustrated with the
promises made to moms that the epidural causes "no problems.") Does anyone know
if this study is published - and if not, where and when.
How would you measure infant's ability to suck? - Just a rhetorical question -
I'm not planning on running any studies.
While I'm on a roll - another question: How can I get hold of Miriam Labbock's
definitions of breastfeeding referred to in earlier LactNet communications? I
am trying to get a handle on the actual number of breastfeeding moms here and
these definitions would be very useful in designing the questions.

I know that sharing complete articles in LactNet is illegal - but please also
realize that some of us have no easy ability to access medical and even general
magazines. Thanks for sharing that which can be shared.

Puerto Rico - Happy Thanksgiving to all. And let us pray the Bosnia talks will
hold...
