Hi Diane,
I am a relative novice in this field but here are some thoughts.
Lots of women 'hunch over' with the cross cradle hold, many tend to
bring the breast to the baby, not the baby to the breast. And it is sad
if this is the only hold mom has been taught. This is the biggest bee
in my bonnet and burr under my saddle: that this is the only position a
mom knows.
I like it sometimes in the beginning while mom/baby are learning,
but teach other holds as well. I keep a small doll in my pocket for
this purpose. Most mothers at my hospital use the cradle hold, and are
often positioned and starting a feeding when I walk in. Most of the
nurses here are great!
I love to teach side-lying position, it empowers mothers to handle
night fdgs. or rest for an afternoon nap. Sleepy babies seem to stay
awake better on the firm mattress, compared to a mother's warm soft arms
and lap.

I am intrigued by Catherine's post today about not supporting the
breast at all. Revolutionary! I'm looking forward to trying this.
I'll be watching for how many mothers are not supporting the breast and
things are fine; not broken and not in need of fixing.

   Thanks for the dialogue.
