Dear Lactnet Friends:

What a great idea, to drink human milk, for Norma's digestive and immune
systems.

Norma does not need permission from anyone to do what she would like to do
for her wound. She is a dedicated, smart person.

If human milk is sterilized, i.e. from a donor milk bank, it will loose the
active properties that could be helpful. If it is fresh, different germs
from someone else's microbiome will be introduced into a vulnerable area. A
tough call to make. But nothing is won without risk.

She'd probably have to sign a release. Maybe a trial of fresh human milk,
with the most properties 3 times for 24 hours? If nothing happens, then
continue. If the wound worsens, stop.

Unpublished research from a Mexican donor milk bank indicated that burns
healed in half the time when DM burn dressings were used compared to
standard burn dressings (see Arnold 2010, Human Milk in the NICU p.
333-334).

The doctors response could range from "what an interesting idea" to "No,
this will kill you". . . best to be prepared. I have seen many physicians,
both as a nurse working in teaching environments, and as a lactation
consultant working with medical students and seeing other lecturers.

I know of, and am grateful for, the many dedicated, open-minded and
fabulous physicians on this list serve. (Kika. Anne, Sarah, and more whose
names escape me at this moment.) I wish they could all be cloned! However,
my most recent experience with doctors was when my husband was hospitalized
last fall in the local giant urban hospital center's ICU and step-down
units, and then to one of the top 10 rehabilitation facilities in the
country. Battling with them over what they would and wouldn't do added the
stress of his illness .

Nasty bugs growing in her leg. Prayers, Reiki and any remote healing
energies are helpful too.

warmly,
