Valerie Fildes book, "Breasts, Bottles, & Babies" discusses dry nursing
under a chapter entitled "Artificial Feeding: The Incidence of and Reasons for,
Handfeeding."
As Helen posted, it seems that dry nursing is the use of flour and water to
feed the baby rather than breastfeeding(in the 18th century often called "meal
pap"). Besides dry nursing, babies would directly suck from various
animals--goats, asses, etc. The direct method was safer than dry nursing because of
less opportunity for contamination.

What we all agree to call things can often mean that we further our
understanding of the things we are naming. But all too often, changing our language
into a code that only those in the profession understand, is not about
furthering understanding. It becomes a barrier, keeping everyday people in ignorance
and elevating the professional into the ivory tower and isolation.
