Denise! What a lovely image, a country where breastfeeding in public is
'almost' universally greeted with smiles. In the almost 20 years I have
been involved I know how much more acceptable breastfeeding has become in
this country (Canada) but 20 women breastfeeding openly would be newsworthy
as a protest -- sigh. A couple of years ago it was suggested that for World
Breastfeeding Week we all compliment any mother we see breastfeeding. I
find it difficult to approach strangers and was concerned the mothers would
be embarrassed but in fact the few moms I did speak to just bloomed with
smiles. I haven't continued to approach moms openly but I do now make a
serious effort to smile directly at them as I know how many disapproving
glances they will receive.
What truly impresses me is the large number of women who breastfeed
'with attitude'. Who really challenge the world to make a comment, who give
the impression they could manage to intimidate anyone who critized them. I
think in ensuring the research results get to women, strong women, we are
giving them the knowledge that what they are doing is right, and really
matters to the health of the their children. The results of that
empowerment are amazing. Aren't women (and their male supports) wonderful!
