I suppose I think of myself as a *lactation* specialist, not an occupational or speech therapist, not a dietitian or nutritionist. My area of expertise, and what I am employed as/for, is to support, teach, and advocate/encourage lactation. I consult on lactation. :)
I have personally never even looked @ a can of formula, so would not be the appropriate person to instruct a mother on how to mix it. I don't particularly like bottles, though I can and have taught moms to pace-feed, but I prefer to use cup, spoon, or syringe feeding methods. For formula feeding moms, I think the mother/baby or nursery nurses would be the appropriate people to instruct mothers on such things.
I have seen, this very week in fact, 2 formula feeding moms change their minds -- 1 because her husband asked her to "at least talk to the lactation consultant" (turns out they had a previous child die of an anomaly and he wanted his baby to "get the best possible start" -- his words (isn't that precious?!) -- and the other because I inadvertantly walked into the wrong pt. room () and tried to immediately play it off with a simple "just wanted to see if you had any questions about breastfeeding?" -- to which, to my shock, mom said, "is there really a difference between formula and breastmilk?" ---> talk about an open door for me!!!! Both these ladies were exclusively BF @ discharge today! Yeah!!
Thank you ladies for listening. I've been thinking through all this all week and all my lactation friends are in San Antonio, leaving me with....well, no one to talk this stuff out with!
