TO All
Today we had a great meeting about the treatment plan for BF moms who's
babies have hypoglycemia. Thanks to the wonderful information in the two
books edited by Richard Schanler, MD " The Pediatric Clinic of North
America" Breastfeeding 2001, part I and II, and articles by Dr. Linda Black,
Dr. Nancy Wight and Dr. Arthur Eidelman, I felt prepared with evidence based
data. I gave 3 articles in advance to all our Peads. and the response and
discussion was very positive.

We will be actually able to use pumping or manual expression if
breastfeeding isn't effective as first line of defence and it will be
written up as the Medical Model so that the Nurses don't jump the gun. We
may actually be using Nutramegin as a temp. supplement if the first 2
methods fail since we have no donor milk.

Now we are going to be looking at preventing hypoglycemia, although I did
already pass out a good info sheet I compiled from the articles I mentioned
earlier.
A great big thanks to all the Doctors here on line who helped put these
issues of the Pediatric Clinics of North America together. We couldn't have
done it without you.

Now I have a question. Can you privately email me whether or not you allow
Moms who have just had a fresh C-section, (spinal or epidural) to breastfeed
in Recovery Room? I need some more data. Can Canadian LC's respond to my
requests as well as all of you keen people from other countries. Than I'll
have a nice broad section. Thanks in advance.

By the way anyone who hasn't heard of the books I mentioned, they were
reviewed in the last JHL and I ordered them right away because I knew that
we would be having this meeting.

Attie Sandink RN. IBCLC.
PS. sorry I wrote such a long note but I haven't been so excited about my
job in a long time.
