As frustrating as it can be trying to change a closed mind, it is really
important to keep trying. I personally find that slow, steady, friendly
pressure works over time. I had a neat call from a local MD who
occasionally refers to me, and who was calling to invite me to speak to a
group of pedi residents. About 6 mo. ago she had had a problem with her own
nursing infant which was related to foremilk imbalance. Although she was
dubious about my management suggestions, I had a track record with her which
allowed her to trust enough to try it. In her recent phone call, she shared
that the advice had worked well. She related her experience to several of
her colleagues, who now use the same advice when they have patients with the
problem. When we positively influence a physician to re-examine his/her bfg
knowledge, we exponentially increase the number of mothers and babies we
can help. I NEVER give up on the tough docs. I have a few I've been
working on for 20 years, and they are just now changing the way they view
bfg and me! To tell you the truth, some of the most wonderful
breastfeeding- supportive docs in Austin used to be very much the opposite.
