Partly thanks to the discussion here, I decided to advise a mother to get
bigger shields, as I noticed her nipples getting stuck in the tunnel. I
think it is a good thing, carefully observing what happens when a mother is
pumping and for us, too, it is a matter of learning to make a good
assessment in this subarea of consulting. Thank you.
Something else, I have been thinking about several times before:

Personally, I have no problem whatsoever with people explaining why they
think the product they use or advise, is a good product. I look at it the
other way around: we wouldn't be using or advising it, if it weren't a good
product, would we?! ;-) So you make a few bucks by selling the product...
who cares? We all have to eat and at least try to compensate for the money
invested in our training and our valuable books and other expenses. Isn't
that (and the fact that professionality and skills and competencies deserve
to be paid for...) why we charge a consultation fee? Shouldn't it be in the
heart of how we practice, that we always keep the mother's interest in mind
when selling her something? If people still have a Lactaset, I only sell
them a membrane and maybe a tube, to get their old stuff attached to a
Symphony, because for them, that is the cheapest solution. For me, it brings
less, but I feel it is unethical to charge more than necessary. It will
probably pay in the long run, because people will trust you, when you offer
good stuff, not unnecessary items, for a fair price.
Bottom line: it should not be necessary to constantly reaffirm that we don't
discuss certain items to promote them, but to spread knowledge about their
usefulness *for mothers and babies*. Not exploiting moms to our own
advantage should be our basic attitude. If not, we are acting against the
Code of Ethics and that should really bother us, even if noone else knows
about it...
